From Cars to Cutlery: How Steel Shapes Our World

Steel is one of the globes most commonly used building and manufacturing materials. Without steel, we would not be able to construct buildings to be as sturdy or in shape as they are, to use and manufacture many of the vehicles that we use, eat with sturdy utensils and even more. Steel is a strong and reliable material that can easily be used for multiple purposes, and will constantly be used for new inventions. For decades, steel has been actively used for construction and will indefinitely remain one of the worlds most common construction materials. In this blog, we have selected different inventions that are constructed and manufactured using steel that make a substantial impact on our lives to prove why we should all be grateful for steel.

Vehicles

Many of the world’s vehicles including motorcycles, trains, airplanes, bicycles, cars, buses and many more are constructed with steel. This is because steel is a protective, safe, and sustainable material that can withstand impact, heat, non-flammable and the weight of passengers. Many engines of vehicles and other parts such as alloys and exhausts are also constructed using a form of steel. Before steel was introduced into the world, most motorised vehicles did not exist as many engines could not be constructed with other materials. If an engine was constructed with another material such as wood or plastic, it would risk being burned or catching on fire. If we did not have steel, it would be likely that we would rely on non-motorised transport to travel around with. This would mean it would take a much longer period of time to travel to places and would put people off of traveling to places that they want or need to be. We should be grateful for steel for allowing us to quickly get to places and to explore the world. As much as vehicles are useful, they are also needed vitally in this day and age.

Cutlery and Utensils

As you are most likely aware, cutlery and utensils are mainly manufactured from stainless steel. This is because stainless steel can withstand the heat of hot food, is easy to clean, and is strong enough to easily hold and cut through food. If we did not use stainless steel for utensils and cutlery, we would have to use single-use cutlery made from wood or plastic., which would lead to much more waste production. Waste production is a huge issue in modern-day, especially plastic waste production. Using only disposable cutlery and utensils would have increased plastic pollution and the overflowing of landfills. Plastic utensils would also be difficult to use and may not be able to withstand the temperature of hot food.

Skyscrapers

Skyscrapers are not only just incredible looking buildings that glorify the skylines of cities across the world, but they are incredibly useful as they are multipurpose and can be used for pretty much anything. Common uses for skyscrapers include hotels, offices, restaurants, tourist attractions, and much more. Some of the worlds most well-known skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building in New York, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan, and the Shard in London, are all constructed using mainly steel beams. The world’s tallest skyscraper in Dubai (Burj Khalifa) stands at 829 metres and is also mainly constructed using steel beams. Skyscrapers are mainly constructed with steel beams are it can support main floors and can be stacked higher and higher. Without steel, we would lose one of the modern wonders of the world.

Homes and Buildings

Most homes and buildings are mostly constructed using concrete or bricks, however, steel is very commonly used to keep the structure and remain sturdy. Steel helps buildings from remaining sturdy as it is an extremely strong material. This means that we are safer when in buildings than we would be if another material was used. Steel is also non-flammable, so it puts homes at less of a risk of the spread of fire in the event of a fire.

Rides and Rollercoasters

Everybody adores a day out at the theme park or funfair, but how different would it be without rides and rollercoasters. Rides and roller coasters are all constructed using steel as it can withstand a large amount of weight and can be moved frequently without being damaged. As handy as steel is, it allows us to have fun and unwind safely. If fairground attractions were constructed using another construction material, they may not function as efficiently and could potentially be dangerous. This could lead to many injuries, or there being no fairgrounds at all. We should appreciate steel for the enjoyment it allows us to have and from protecting us from danger or potential hazards.
